So I have a Honda Trx450R I’m preparing for a trip. The transmission shifts really hard (clunks) out of neutral into 1st or 2nd gear but shifts easy back into neutral. When it take it for a spin and get it warm it is hard (hard to find neutral) to shift into neutral as well.

Can anybody tell me what’s going on with my transmission?

when was the last oil change?

Is it a split case engine or not?

Yes it has separate gear oil. I change both oils every trip so maximum it has a week of riding on it.

hmmm sounds like maybe the clutch basket should be checked out or maybe some of the discs are starting to get too worn

Coming from a Ducati owner, a lot of bikes just have really clunky transmissions. To smoothen out shifts into nuetral, try shifting into neutral while the bike is still moving.

If you are stopped, just roll the bike forward a foot or so and it should pop into Nuetral easily.

It seems kind of violent like it's putting wear on it though.

Could be. A lot of clutch drops to get out of some dead end sand pits. I'll check it out!

A couple things I would look at. First, clutch adjustment. Often you are not getting enough disengagement with an oil bath clutch. Factory specs do not always apply. Try adjusting it a bit different and see how it works. Constant mesh transmissions can be tricky. On my Harley, I found that a bit more disengagement works quite well. I still hold the clutch in for about 10-20 seconds before I put it in gear after sitting a while to make sure it is free.

Second. Run a synthetic oil in the clutch. It made a noticeable difference on my bike. You should not have to change the clutch oil that often.

Enjoy your trip.

I just had to adjust my old gs1000 clutch cable. It was hard to find neutral sometimes because the clutch was never fully disengaging when I pulled the lever in. If it is clunking hard going into a gear, the clutch might be slightly engaged still when you pull it in to shift.

My 1300 clunks like it’s broke coming out of first. Second less so. And when it’s hot it gets tricky.
